Subdivision of the beat is vital, in order to achieve the rhythmic precision required for this work.
After the introduction, the opening motif is used throughout the piece, in rhythmic unison at first and then it weaves in and out of the various parts.
Short and long articulations should be carefully observed, as should accents and bowing. Firm left-hand fingers are desirable for a ringing pizzicato sound.
A piano part is included, but is not essential. Nova Jornada is Portuguese for New Journey and is dedicated to my friend, Raquel Bastos, as she embarks upon her new journey as Director of Strings at Somerville House.
